The origin of the Tenerife fire, a “human oversight,” according to the president of the Cabildo.

The President of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, noted this Tuesday that “everything seems to indicate” that the origin of the forest fire declared at 14:00 hours on Monday in Los Partidos de Franquis, in the municipality of El Tanque, may stem from human “carelessness”.

Dávila indicated that there are currently three specialised agents investigating the origins of the fire, although “everything seems to indicate that it is not” an intentional fire, “but yes, unfortunately, it probably does stem from human carelessness”.

In this regard, she took the opportunity to make an appeal during high fire risk, urging precautionary measures, such as not using machinery that could cause sparks or start a fire. She emphasised, in statements to Onda Cero Canarias reported by Europa Press, that they must “wait a bit” to see the origin of the fire, but acknowledged that “everything seems to indicate that while it may not be intentional, it is indeed due to human causes resulting from carelessness”.

The President of the Cabildo de Tenerife reminded that the fire operation on the island was activated in March and will remain in place until the end of October or early November, during which time military patrols will be involved in surveillance and deterrence efforts.

The fire was declared stabilised at 21:00 hours last night (Canary time), after affecting an area of 70 hectares, mostly consisting of scrubland and retama, with a perimeter of 3.5 kilometres.
