The Granadilla de Abona Town Council has announced the preventive closure of La Jaquita and La Batata beaches, located in El Médano, due to a possible obstruction in the Montaña Pelada underwater outlet. As a precautionary measure, swimming has been banned until the necessary technical inspections are carried out and the safety of the waters is ensured.

This closure adds to a series of similar incidents that have affected the southern coast of Tenerife throughout 2025, marking a concerning trend in the midst of the tourist season.

Beach Closures in 2025

La Jaquita was temporarily closed last May after high levels of Escherichia coli were detected. It was later reopened after follow-up testing confirmed that the water was safe for swimming.

In the municipality of Adeje, there was an order to close Troya I, Troya II, and El Puertito beaches, also due to the presence of faecal bacteria. The beaches were closed for several days until favourable results were obtained from follow-up analyses.

Although away from the south, Playa Jardín, in Puerto de la Cruz, was closed since July 2024 due to a damaged underwater outlet. Its reopening, eagerly awaited by local businesses and residents, took place last June.
