The CajaCanarias Foundation is hosting the exhibition “A Beacon of Hope at Sea” at its headquarters in Santa Cruz, a proposal that highlights the work of Mercy Ships – Vessels of Hope, an international organisation operating the largest fleet of civilian hospital ships in the world to provide free healthcare in developing countries.

The exhibition, comprising striking images and audiovisual material, allows visitors to gain an insight into the scope of the humanitarian work of Mercy Ships, as well as its connection to Tenerife, established since April 1991. The photographs and videos tell real stories of individuals whose lives have been transformed by free surgical interventions and medical treatments in contexts where access to healthcare is virtually non-existent.

The inauguration was attended by Gerardo Vangioni, President of Mercy Ships in Spain, and Óliver González, General Director of the CajaCanarias Foundation, who highlighted the value of volunteering and international cooperation as fundamental pillars of the project.

The exhibition will be open until 1 August, from Tuesday to Friday, 10:00 to 14:00 and 17:00 to 20:00, and on Saturdays, from 10:00 to 14:00. Admission is free.

With over four decades of activity, Mercy Ships has served in more than 56 countries, benefiting directly over 2.8 million people. Through its two hospital ships – the Africa Mercy and the Global Mercy – the organisation has conducted over 119,400 surgeries, treated more than 212,400 patients, completed over 547,600 dental procedures, and trained more than 55,800 health professionals. Additionally, it has executed more than 1,100 projects related to the development of hospital infrastructure and sustainable agriculture.

The exhibition also aims to inspire new individuals to join as volunteers for this charitable mission. Each year, hundreds of professionals from various fields, from medical personnel to technicians, teachers, cooks, and crew members, volunteer selflessly aboard the Mercy Ships hospital vessels. Visitors to the exhibition will not only gain insight into this impactful humanitarian work but will also find information on-site about how to collaborate or volunteer, as the exhibition space includes detailed information and guidance for those wishing to get involved. Moreover, more information can be accessed through the official website: www.nde.ong
