Highest alert due to wildfire risk in Gran Canaria and La Gomera

The Directorate General of Emergencies has declared a maximum alert due to the risk of wildfires in Gran Canaria and La Gomera, at over 200 metres above sea level in the north and over 400 metres on the slopes.

The alert situation is also maintained in El Hierro, La Palma, and Tenerife.

The Directorate General of Emergencies explains that the alert for high temperatures is in effect across the entire archipelago, and for wind in La Gomera and Gran Canaria.

Maximum temperatures could reach or exceed 34-40 degrees Celsius, and the minimums will be unusually high, according to the Directorate General of Emergencies.

There will be a temperature inversion at low altitudes, below 400 metres, and the dust haze is expected to ease, while the wind, generally from the northeast, will be strong in the midlands and high areas, with probable very strong gusts reaching or exceeding 70-90 kilometres per hour.
