Regional Festivals and Pilgrimage of San Benito Abad: The 37th Gala Celebrating Canarian Women to Honour Broadcaster Himar González

The event, promoted by Orfeón La Paz in collaboration with the La Laguna City Council, will take place this Wednesday at 20:00 hours in the Teatro Leal

San Cristóbal de La Laguna will host one of the most emotional events of the San Benito Abad 2025 festivities programme this Wednesday, 9 July. The Teatro Leal will open its doors at 20:00 hours to celebrate the XXXVII Gala for the Celebration of Canarian Women, a tribute to outstanding professionals from the islands, this time highlighting the career of meteorologist and communicator Himar González.

The evening is organised by Orfeón La Paz, with the collaboration of the City Council’s Festivities Department, and will be presented by journalist Roberto González. Admission will be free until the available capacity of this cultural venue in the city is reached.

The event will be enlivened by performances from the Real Hespérides Folkloric Group, the choirs of Orfeón La Paz, Abubukaka, and the Tuna de Económicas from the University of La Laguna.

The City Council’s Councillor for Festivities, Dailos González, congratulated the honouree for being an example of “Canarian women who have succeeded nationally in their professional fields, while maintaining their connection to their roots, carrying the name of our land to various corners of the country”.

For his part, the president of Orfeón La Paz, Julián Brito, highlighted that this gala “has become established in the municipality and in the programme of the San Benito festivities as a public recognition aimed at raising awareness of various professionals from the archipelago who have made their mark and become true references in their sector”.

Himar González studied at the University of La Laguna, graduating in the specialty of Applied Physics and the Atmosphere. Her beginnings as a communicator were forged in various spaces at Televisión Canaria, before subsequently replacing Mario Picazo in the weather information segment at Telecinco. She then moved to the Atresmedia group, where she currently provides forecasts for the weekend edition of Antena 3 national.

The last Gala for the Celebration of Canarian Women praised the work and achievements of Tenerife soprano Carmen Acosta.
