SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Jan 4 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Deputy Minister of Employment of the Government of the Canary Islands, Gustavo Santana, has highlighted this Tuesday the historical record of the affiliation to Social Security in the Archipelago, with 831,919 contributors at the end of 2021, when analyzing the data of registered unemployment corresponding to December. In addition, the Canary Islands stood as the Autonomous Community with the highest increase in membership, accounting for an annual increase of 6.43% during the past year.

For the eighth consecutive month, the Islands registered a decrease in registered unemployment. Specifically, it was reduced by 3,612 unemployed people during the last month (-1.75%) and by 66,618 compared to December 2020 (24.72%). With this decrease, the global figure stands in the Canary Islands at 202,819 unemployed, Gustavo Santana detailed before highlighting that the Islands recorded the fourth largest annual reduction in Spain, only behind the Balearic Islands, Aragon and Catalonia, in addition to 5,430 unemployed people less than in the last month of 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Unemployment fell in all age groups and in all sectors. Among the former, the decrease of almost 45% in youth unemployment (under 25 years) stood out; and by sectors, highlighted the decrease in hospitality, about 40% compared to the previous month, added the Deputy Minister of Employment together with the General Director of Labor, Alejandro Ramos.

Precisely, Alejandro Ramos reported 13,061 workers included in a temporary employment regulation file at the end of 2021 in the Canary Islands and valued the introduction in the recent labor reform of an ERTE by limitation, not exceptional, but integrated into the ordinary regulatory framework, with conditions even more favorable than those in force as a possible alternative if an extension is necessary as of February 28.
