There have been many reckless behaviours on the roads of Tenerife. Improper overtaking, speeding, reckless driving… but some incidents become viral more for the driver’s antics than the seriousness of the infraction.
It occurred in the tourist municipality of Puerto de la Cruz, in the north of the island. A driver could hardly believe what he encountered as he approached the locality. The moped in front of him was carrying a suitcase as if it were a sidecar.
Thus, the young woman riding as a passenger was tasked with holding onto the travel suitcase, which ran smoothly thanks to its four wheels. But if that weren’t attention-grabbing enough, she wasn’t holding it with her hand; instead, she was using her right foot, which posed even greater risk of it slipping away.
Road
According to the video shared on social media, set to the tune of the popular Benny Hill series, the moped travelled several kilometres along the road within Puerto de la Cruz.
The regulations from the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) classify the way the vehicle is driven as an infraction since the transport of luggage does not meet the requirements. Specifically, Traffic specifies that the load carried by motorcycles, such as luggage, must be properly secured in a carrier or luggage rack or in two side bags or suitcases located at the rear of the chassis.
Even in this case, the load, however, must not extend laterally more than 50 centimetres on either side of the longitudinal axis or more than 25 centimetres at the rear.
Fines
In this case, the manner of carrying the suitcase clearly violates the regulations, meaning users could face a fine. What’s more, related driving safety offences could be classified, potentially resulting in a serious infraction.
A €200 fine is common for not properly distributing the load or exceeding protrusion limits. If the way the load is carried endangers road safety, the fine could be higher and could even involve the loss of points from the driver’s licence.
