The representation of women leading local councils in the Canary Islands remains limited, despite progress made in recent years. Achieving gender parity in the archipelago’s municipal politics is still a distant goal. Only seventeen councils in the Canaries are headed by women. This means that one in five, specifically 19% of the archipelago’s 88 municipalities, have female mayors. Among them, two oversee island capitals: Carolina Darias in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which is also a provincial and regional capital, and Angélica Padilla in San Sebastián de La Gomera.
