The Tenerife Council Doesn’t Anticipate Water Restrictions for Summer, with Reservoirs at 68% Capacity

The Insular Drought Board, led by the Council of Tenerife, held its seventh meeting this Friday 13th to analyse the water situation on the island. During the meeting, it was highlighted that the reservoirs have reached 68.2% of their capacity compared to 39.8% in 2024, “which minimises the risk of restrictions in water supply and agriculture in the various municipalities,” explained the island corporation in a statement.

The Councillor for Natural Environment, Blanca Pérez, indicated that the storage capacity has increased in 2025 in anticipation of the summer, reaching 68.2% compared to 39.8% in 2024.

This means that reserves have increased by 1.7 million cubic metres more, “ensuring supply,” assures the councillor.

“With the contributions made, about 27,000 cubic metres, and the rains in March and April, the situation is reasonably good looking towards the summer,” explains Pérez in the statement.

On the other hand, no municipality on the island has contacted the Water Council of Tenerife to request water for the summer.

Moreover, regarding sewer connections, the City Council of La Laguna has reported that within the campaign, 193 connection applications have been gathered, which will result in about 27,000 m3 of water annually collected for treatment.

Both infrastructures are key for the future because they will be able to guarantee water security on the island, as they will generate 30,000 m3/day of water each, which means they will provide a new flow of 60,000 m3/day to the metropolitan area and dispense with spring water for supply in a couple of years, thus ensuring water security for agriculture and people, explains Pérez.

The councillor also indicated that the new La Orotava WWTP has already been tendered, a structuring infrastructure that, with the association of a future desalination plant, pumping and tertiary treatment, will allow water to be supplied to the Cruz Santa reservoir, which in turn can carry regenerated water of good quality suitable for agriculture as far as Icod de los Vinos.
