Tenerife Hoteliers Propose 13.5% Pay Rise to Resolve Labour Dispute

The Hotel and Non-Hotel Association of Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro, known as Ashotel, has tabled a proposal in collective bargaining to increase wages by 13.5% and establish an agreement up to 30 June 2028, “benefiting 33,655 employees in the accommodation sector across the province”. This increase is outlined as follows: 7% for the first year – from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026, 3.25% from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, and the remaining 3.25% from 1 July 2027 to 30 June 2028. The hotel industry in the western province hopes this offer will resolve the ongoing labour issues in hospitality.

This latest proposal was presented on Tuesday to the trade unions involved in the negotiations: the Hospitality Union Table, led by Base Syndicalists, UGT, Intersindical Canaria, and USO Canarias, along with CCOO, following a meeting held on Monday in the capital of Tenerife.

The proposal also includes, for the duration of the agreement, a guarantee to maintain purchasing power, calculated as the difference between the agreed increase for each year of the agreement’s duration and the Consumer Price Index for the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife set annually by the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (Istac).

However, the unions warn that Ashotel’s proposal includes "fine print" that could lead to "absorption and loss of employment rights."

Mobilisation

The Base Syndicalists staged demonstrations on Tuesday outside two hotels in southern Tenerife to protest against Ashotel’s "blockage" of a 6.5% prior wage review before negotiating a new hospitality agreement.

This leading union in the sector within Santa Cruz de Tenerife province reminds that next Monday they will propose calling a strike every Friday in July and August.
