Hiking in the Canary Islands: Autumn Trails Await

Autumn Hiking in the Canaries: Easy Trails, Stunning Views, and Ideal Weather

When the summer heat begins to ease and gentle breezes herald the change of season, the Canary Islands transform into a hiking paradise. Autumn paints the forests with intense greens, moderates temperatures, and fills the trails with tranquility, providing the perfect moment to discover the islands’ natural beauty at a leisurely pace. From volcanic landscapes to lush laurisilva forests, the archipelago invites exploration in a climate combining sun, mist, and humidity. It’s an ideal time for those seeking serenity, vibrant scenery, and less crowded routes in environments that seem frozen in time.

Hiking Among the Volcanoes

On La Palma, the Route of the Volcanoes ranks as one of the most stunning trails in the archipelago. This approximately 24-kilometre route traverses the Cumbre Vieja Natural Park, where ancient craters and more recent lava flows narrate centuries of geological history. In autumn, the views become sharper, and the air cooler, making the 6 to 7 hours of walking more manageable.

  • Difficulty: High.
  • Recommendation: Wear comfortable clothing, bring water, mountain footwear, and sun protection.

Los Tilos Forest

Also on La Palma is the Los Tilos Forest, a natural sanctuary cloaked in laurisilva, one of Europe’s oldest ecosystems. Its paths weave through ravines and streams that regain their splendour in autumn thanks to the rains. The humidity creates an enveloping, almost magical atmosphere.

  • Difficulty: Medium.
  • Duration: 2–3 hours.
  • Recommendation: Bring a waterproof jacket and enjoy the sound of water accompanying your journey.

Heading to Roque Nublo

On Gran Canaria, Roque Nublo stands tall as one of the gems of autumn hiking. The ascent to this natural monument is brief but rewards hikers with one of the most spectacular views in the archipelago: from the summit, one can see Teide in the distance. The fresh and clear climate of this season allows for uninterrupted horizon views.

  • Difficulty: Low.
  • Duration: 1–2 hours.
  • Recommendation: Ideal for beginners or families. Bring a light jacket and a camera.

The Water Route

The Anaga Rural Park in Tenerife hosts one of the most emblematic routes in the northern part of the island: the Water Route. This trail winds through ancient paths once used by locals to collect water, surrounded by humid forests and mysterious mists that envelop the autumn landscape.

  • Difficulty: Medium.
  • Duration: 3–4 hours.
  • Recommendation: Wear non-slip footwear and respect the area’s high biodiversity.

Barranco del Infierno

Also in Tenerife, Barranco del Infierno in Adeje offers a regulated route leading to a natural waterfall after a walk through a landscape rich in vegetation. In autumn, the stream’s flow increases, making the path even more spectacular.

  • Difficulty: Medium.
  • Duration: 3–4 hours.
  • Recommendation: Advance booking is necessary for access. Bring water and sturdy footwear.

Caldera de Bandama

The Caldera de Bandama on Gran Canaria allows hikers to walk along a volcanic crater formed millennia ago. The circular route encircles the crater’s rim and offers views of its interior, Las Palmas, and the Atlantic Ocean. The cooler autumn climate makes the hike comfortable and safe.

  • Difficulty: Low.
  • Duration: 2–3 hours.
  • Recommendation: Suitable footwear for rocky terrain and a camera to capture the panoramic views.

Fortaleza de Chipude

On La Gomera, the Fortaleza de Chipude is one of the most iconic routes. The trail ascends to a rocky plateau that offers an impressive view of Garajonay National Park and its mountains. Autumn provides a temperate atmosphere and golden light that enhances the landscape.

  • Difficulty: Medium.
  • Duration: 2–3 hours.
  • Recommendation: Light clothing and ample water are advisable. Suitable for moderately experienced hikers.

An Ideal Season for Walking

Hiking in autumn in the Canary Islands is an experience that blends nature, tranquillity, and discovery. The days are milder, the trails less crowded, and the landscapes display their finest attributes. From the ravines of Tenerife to the forests of La Palma and the mountains of La Gomera, each island offers a distinct adventure and an opportunity to reconnect with nature. Whether for a short getaway or a demanding trek, the Canary archipelago confirms in autumn why it is a unique destination for hiking: due to its pleasant climate, diverse landscapes, and that blend of silence and beauty that can only be found here.
