The lectures were delivered by architects and legal experts specialised in heritage intervention, with proven experience in both academic and nationally recognised public institutions.
Joint Initiative by the Cabildo and Architects’ Association
The Cabildo of Tenerife, through the Departments of Presidency, Administration and Public Services, Territorial Planning, and Historical Heritage, has jointly organised the Training Conference Cycle on Intervention in Built Cultural Heritage with the Official College of Architects of Tenerife. The sessions took place today (Thursday) and were attended by the Councillor for the Presidency, José Miguel Ruano; the Insular Director of Historical Heritage, Isabel de Esteban; and the Dean of the Official College of Architects of Tenerife, La Gomera, and El Hierro, María Nieves Febles Benítez.
Highlighting the Importance of Multidisciplinary Collaboration
José Miguel Ruano emphasised the significance of the event, underscoring that the protection of cultural heritage cannot be approached from a single perspective. “It is essential that there is collaboration among different professionals: architects, legal experts, historians, and other specialists. Only by combining their knowledge can we ensure that the work conducted on our heritage is correct, respectful, and sustainable,” he remarked.
He further pointed out that this multidisciplinary approach is crucial to address current challenges: “Cultural heritage is not only a testament to the past but also a resource for the present and future. Therefore, it is vital that technical work is supported by a robust legal framework and rigorous historical interpretation.”
Ruano concluded by emphasising the value of such gatherings: “Events like these create a space for reflection and dialogue where consensus can be built and the foundations established for administrations, civil society, and professionals to work in the same direction: to preserve and enhance our cultural heritage.”
Collaboration and Commitment Emphasised
Isabel de Esteban stated that “these sessions are an example of collaboration and shared commitment. A meeting space that helps us advance towards a common goal: ensuring that Tenerife’s cultural legacy is transmitted strengthened and vibrant to future generations.”
For her part, María Nieves Febles Benítez expressed that “the protection of built heritage is an investment in the conservation of our identity as a distinguishing feature. This series of conferences arises from a public-private collaboration between the COA and the Historical Heritage department of the Cabildo of Tenerife to promote ongoing training for professionals facing the challenge of intervening in the built heritage of the Canary Islands. These working sessions coincide with the 40th anniversary of the Spanish Historical Heritage Law, a date that compels us to reflect on what has been done well and what could be improved.”
Future Conferences
The lectures were delivered by architects and legal experts specialised in heritage intervention, possessing accredited experience in both academic and nationally recognised public institutions.
The conferences will be held bi-monthly at the Assembly Hall of the Official College of Architects of Tenerife, La Gomera, and El Hierro, featuring a prior registration system that will enable the subsequent issuance of a participation certificate jointly provided by the organising institutions.
