Fernando Canellada Appointed New Director of La Provincia
The journalist Fernando Canellada, currently the deputy director of La Provincia, will become the new director of the newspaper, replacing Antonio Cacereño. This was announced on Wednesday by Editorial Prensa Ibérica, the owner of the publication. Cacereño, who has led the newspaper for thirteen years, will now take on the role of director of Club La Provincia and assume new responsibilities related to the group’s editorial strategy. The transition was communicated to the staff by Ainhoa Moll, editorial director of Prensa Ibérica.
Fernando Canellada’s Background
Born in Oviedo, Canellada holds a degree in Classical Philology from the University of Oviedo and studied Journalism at the University of the Basque Country. He began his career at La Voz de Asturias as a correspondent in Nava. In 1982, he joined La Nueva España, where he also served as a correspondent for ABC in the Principality.
In 1994, Canellada was part of the La Nueva España team that received the Ortega y Gasset Award for Journalism for their investigative work on the notorious Petromocho case, a fraud related to the alleged construction of a petrochemical plant in Asturias.
From Asturias to Gran Canaria
At La Nueva España, Canellada held roles such as section chief, news editor, and deputy director until 2009, when he was transferred to Gran Canaria as deputy director of La Provincia.
This change in directorship marks the second significant shift within Prensa Ibérica’s Canary Islands media in recent months. In May, journalist Dunia E. Torres was appointed director of El Día/La Opinión de Tenerife, succeeding Joaquín Catalán, who held the position for six years.
