The Popular Parliamentary Group questions the President of the Canary Islands Government about the current situation regarding unaccompanied foreign minors who have applied for asylum.
During the plenary session on 23rd and 24th September, the Popular Parliamentary Group will express their indignation to the President of the Canary Islands Government, Fernando Clavijo, regarding the unsustainable situation created by the central government in relocating unaccompanied foreign minors seeking asylum to the mainland.
Despite the almost nonexistent information from Madrid regarding the transfers of these minors, around 110 have been moved to the mainland from over 1,000 that the Supreme Court ordered the Spanish government to relocate six months ago.
The Popular spokesperson, Luz Reverón, states that the outcome “is outrageous” and reminds that Sánchez’s government “has systematically and deliberately disobeyed a Supreme Court ruling, which constitutes a serious case of judicial non-compliance, political negligence, and institutional abandonment.”
“We are not talking about an oversight. We are discussing a predetermined strategy: to turn the Canary Islands into a bottleneck without an exit for hundreds of minors who have applied for asylum,” Reverón adds.
Additionally, the Popular representatives will question the Vice President of the Canary Islands Government, Manuel Domínguez, about the implications for the Canary Islands after Congress vetoed a PP amendment, approved in the Senate, that included a credit of €1.2 billion to ensure air connectivity for the residents of the Canary Islands.
The Group will also raise questions concerning the conclusions of the meeting with the European Parliament’s Petitions Committee, and whether the Spanish government has the competence and mechanisms to reverse the residential rental of tourist accommodation.
Moreover, Popular spokesperson Rebeca Paniagua will summon the Health Minister, Esther Monzón, to discuss the current state of surgical waiting lists, complementary tests, and specialisations in hospitals. Meanwhile, MP Sonsoles Martín will do the same with the Councillor of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports, Poli Suárez, regarding the assessment of the start of the 2025/2026 academic year.
Lastly, the MP for Gran Canaria, David Morales, will question the Councillor of the Presidency, Public Administration, Justice and Security, regarding the possibility of increasing police surveillance at public transport hubs in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Likewise, the parliamentary representative for the island of El Hierro, Juanma Casañas, will ask the Councillor of Territorial Policy, Territorial Cohesion, and Waters about the actions taken during the two fire outbreaks experienced in El Hierro this summer.
