Registrations now open for training event in the city from 6 to 10 October
San Cristóbal de La Laguna will host the ‘Technical Days on Geological Risks’ from 6 to 10 October. This event is primarily aimed at technical staff and emergency management authorities dealing with situations such as landslides, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, or tsunamis. The initiative is promoted by the Canary Islands Volcano Association, with support from the local council.
Individuals wishing to attend this event, part of the ‘La Laguna, Naturally Safe’ project, can now view the full programme of talks and register via the website www.volcanesdecanarias.org. Spaces are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
Badel Albelo, the city’s Councillor for Citizen Security, noted, “This activity arrives in La Laguna backed by the success of previous geological risk events aimed at the general public, which attracted around 80 participants.” He added, “All these actions will help us improve technical and community responses to any phenomena of this magnitude.”
The venue for this initiative will be the auditorium of the Comprehensive Vocational Training Centre of La Laguna, which is hosting the event. Additionally, the General Directorate of Studies, Training, and Research in Public Safety of the Canary Islands Government is involved, allowing for official certification of the training for attendees who meet the criteria.
These training days will comprise a total of 20 hours (15 in-person and five online), combining theoretical-practical methodologies with interactive approaches. Planned sessions include a round table sharing real experiences from those involved in geological emergencies and a virtual simulation exercise to apply the knowledge acquired during the theoretical sessions.
Volcanoes of the Canary Islands Association
Founded in 2011, the Volcanoes of the Canary Islands Association is a national citizens’ organisation registered with Spain’s Ministry of the Interior. Based in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, it is a non-profit collective working since 2004 to enhance volcanic culture in the Canary Islands.
Its volunteers operate entirely altruistically to provide clear yet rigorous information and training about volcanic activity in the Canary Islands and beyond. Additionally, their work includes disseminating information and advice on how to face other natural phenomena affecting the islands. For more information about the association and its activities, visit www.volcanesdecanarias.org or follow them on major social media platforms.
