PP Secretary General Advocates for Stricter National Immigration Policies
Call for Change in Immigration Policy
The Secretary General of the Popular Party (PP), Miguel Tellado, emphasised on Saturday during the political course opening event of the PP in the Canary Islands, held in Tenerife, the need for a national immigration policy akin to that of surrounding countries with governments of all political colours. He stated that this policy should focus on “maintaining a firm stance against human trafficking and illegal immigration”.
According to Tellado, the current immigration policy under Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is being managed with “unacceptable frivolity” and is generating a “call effect” that is irresponsible and yielding significant consequences. He argued that a “course correction” is essential.
Spain’s Immigration Plan
Tellado proposed that Spain requires “a plan that aligns us with what other countries in our area are doing, combining a firm approach with intelligence, planning, and resources to integrate those arriving with the intention of contributing to the country”.
He reiterated the importance of “combating human traffickers and protecting our borders” as well as “equipping security forces with more resources”. Additionally, Tellado expressed his commitment to “comprehensive and effective immigration policies” involving all administrations while upholding the principle of equality.
He assured that should Alberto Núñez Feijóo attain the presidency, “the immigration issue will become an absolute priority” and pledged that the Canary Islands “will no longer be neglected by the Government”.
Concerns Over Coastal Security
Meanwhile, the regional leader of the PP and Vice President of the Canary Islands, Manuel Domínguez, raised concerns regarding the “insecurity of our coasts” due to “borders being wide open”. He highlighted the recent arrival of “boats with undocumented crew members and the constant presence of narco-boats”, suggesting this indicates a “lack of control and surveillance in the region”.
