Belgian Couple Murdered in Tenerife: Jury Trial to Commence
Popular Jury to Hear Case
A popular jury will trial three individuals accused of murdering a Belgian couple in Tenerife. The couple consists of a man who remains unaccounted for and a woman whose dismembered body was discovered floating in the waters of Arico in 2024. The Court of First Instance number 1 in Arona has converted preliminary proceedings from that year into a trial before a jury. The case involves three individuals, also of Belgian nationality, who are currently in provisional custody, according to sources from the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands.
Further Evidence Requested by Defences
The order to transform the investigation into a jury trial, issued last June, stipulates a series of evidential procedures proposed by the defence teams. These include additional witness statements, the submission of the final autopsy report for the allegedly murdered woman, and a technical report on the geolocation of the defendants’ mobile phones during the dates on which the crimes allegedly occurred.
Details of the Case
The 66-year-old woman and her 71-year-old husband disappeared in mid-April 2024. On the 27th of that month, the woman’s body was found floating near the Tenerife municipality of Arico, with a plastic bag over her head and both legs and one hand amputated. The husband has not yet been located.
Two of the alleged perpetrators, who reportedly lived in Adeje near the murdered couple, were apprehended by police in Belgium following an international search order issued by the Arona Court. The third individual was arrested later in Tenerife.
