Santa Úrsula Feels Overlooked on the Northern Motorway

Santa Úrsula Seeks Change to TF-5 Signage

Santa Úrsula feels overlooked on the North Highway. The local council has requested the change of four signs on the TF-5 from the Cabildo of Tenerife. This request was previously made to the council by the PP of the municipality. Darío Mesa, a popular councillor, has voiced this change on social media. The modification requested by the council concerns the signs at exit 31 of the northern highway of Tenerife in both directions.

The issue involves four blue panels that incorrectly identify Cuesta La Villa as a district of La Orotava, according to the PP councillor. He adds that “this is not the case, as the municipality of La Orotava is much further away”.

Requested Since the Start of the Mandate

Mesa explains that this signage has been this way for many years and that requests for change have been made repeatedly during council meetings since the beginning of this mandate, that is, in 2023. However, changing this type of signage falls under the jurisdiction of the Cabildo of Tenerife. Thus, he urges the Department of Roads to implement the change.

“People have become accustomed to seeing it this way because it has been wrong for many years, but it really should not appear like that. It is true that you can access La Orotava from Santa Úrsula, but Cuesta La Villa belongs to our municipality,” says the local PP councillor.

A Matter of Priorities

The mayor of Santa Úrsula, Juan Acosta (AISU), reminds that the request was made to the island entity at the beginning of this mandate. “That sign has been there for over 50 years, and we want it changed in both directions. We want it to carry the name it deserves,” he asserts. However, Acosta prioritises the needs of the 3,500 residents of Cuesta La Villa, stating that “they have no difficulty knowing their belonging. Moreover, I am much more interested in the Cabildo resurfacing Road 217, painting it, or building the roundabout, which is a significant improvement for traffic in that area, carrying over 35,000 vehicles daily,” he notes. He also adds that it is crucial to have the corresponding parking for this area of Santa Úrsula.

“We have not forgotten about the panels at exit 31 of the TF-5; instead, we have given priority to what we truly believe deserves it,” explains the mayor of the northern Tenerife municipality. On the other hand, Acosta clarifies that he does not wish to create any issues or discord with the Town Hall of La Orotava because “we all know which municipality we belong to,” he concludes.
