Tenerife Implements Level I Fire Prevention Measures
Fire Prevention Measures
The Cabildo of Tenerife will implement Level I fire prevention measures tomorrow, Tuesday. These measures include a ban on lighting fires in recreational and outdoor areas, as well as the use of any pyrotechnics. Although access to forest tracks and trails is permitted, the island corporation advises against it and urges the public to exercise extreme caution with any activities that might lead to wildfires.
Prohibited Activities
Specifically, the Level I measures prohibit barbecues, bonfires, gas cookers or any form of outdoor cooking in mountain areas. The use of any machinery or tools that may produce sparks, such as brush cutters, welding equipment, or angle grinders, is also banned. Furthermore, smoking is prohibited in recreational areas, camping sites, and public infrastructure located in mountainous regions.
Permitted Activities
Individuals may traverse the island’s tracks and trails, as well as engage in forest resource utilisation and hunting activities, provided that they take all necessary precautions. The Cabildo has adopted these measures following a wildfire risk alert issued by the General Directorate of Emergencies of the Canary Government, which affects El Hierro, La Gomera, La Palma, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria (in the latter case, at elevations above 400 metres).
Adverse Weather Conditions
This decision comes amidst a heatwave, with maximum temperatures potentially exceeding 30 degrees Celsius and reaching as high as 36 degrees, alongside a thermal inversion below 400 metres. Relative humidity is expected to range from 20% to 40% above 500-600 metres, accompanied by dust from the Sahara. Winds from the east and southeast in mid-level areas, high regions, and peaks are also anticipated, ranging from moderate to light starting Thursday. Additionally, the Canary Government has declared a pre-alert situation due to strong winds, dust, coastal phenomena, and high temperatures.
