High Temperatures Expected
The General Directorate of Emergencies of the Canary Islands Government has declared a wildfire risk alert in Gran Canaria due to a heatwave affecting the island at elevations above 400 metres, where temperatures could reach 34ºC. This warning will be in effect from 10:00 this Monday.
Additionally, relative humidity levels of 30% or lower are expected above altitudes of 700 to 800 metres, with haze in the upper atmosphere and light to moderate winds from the east and southeast in the midlands, high areas, and peaks.
Ongoing Alerts in Other Islands
Emergencies reminds residents that a pre-alert for wildfire risk has been in place on El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, and Tenerife since 1 June. The same government department has also declared a pre-alert for wind across all the islands, which will come into effect at 18:00 this Sunday.
Forecasts suggest moderate to strong winds from the northeast, with gusts potentially reaching or exceeding 50 to 70 kilometres per hour.
Coastal Phenomena Alert
From 18:00 this Sunday, a pre-alert for coastal phenomena will also be activated in the western islands and Gran Canaria, due to expected strong winds from the northeast of up to 70 kilometres per hour. The conditions could lead to heavy swells and a rough sea with waves measuring between 1 to 2 metres, reaching heights of up to 2.5 metres.
