Ground staff at Tenerife South Airport to strike for six days in August.

The UGT union has called a strike by ground staff of the Menzies group that will affect five Spanish airports: Barcelona-El Prat, Alicante, Palma, Málaga, and Tenerife Sur, on the upcoming days of 16, 17, 23, 24, 30, and 31 August.

In Barcelona, around 400 workers out of the nearly 1,500 employed by the group in Spain will participate in the strike, according to union sources speaking to EFE.

Menzies provides services to airlines such as Emirates, British Airways, American Airlines, EasyJet, Turkish Airlines, Norwegian, and Wizz Air.

The representatives of the workers are protesting against “serious and repeated breaches of labour agreements and the conditions established by the contract,” they stated in a statement.

Among these violations, UGT cites “salary breaches, violation of transfer rights, disorganisation in shifts and hours, and constant errors in personnel and payroll management.”

They also claim there is a lack of staff to handle the workload, as well as “arbitrary imposition of holidays.”

The union asserts that the company is breaching the sectoral handling agreement, the company’s own agreement, and the sectoral agreement ratified before the Interconfederal Mediation and Arbitration Service (SIMA) in December 2024, which allowed a previous strike to be called off.
