The Civil Guard has arrested a 53-year-old man from Arona who was about to travel to the mainland with 88 stolen mobile phones and a tablet, as well as up to €21,000 in cash, much of it hidden in a false bottom of one of the suitcases.
According to a statement from the Civil Guard on Thursday, the incidents occurred when, during the check of checked baggage, they found a suitcase containing numerous electronic devices, which led them to locate the owner of the luggage to open it.
Inside, they discovered 89 electronic devices (88 high-end mobiles and one tablet), with the detainee unable to justify their origin.
Additionally, during the same search, a package was found hidden in the false bottom of one of the suitcases containing €11,000 and £1,045 in cash.
The man also had more than €9,000 in cash in his waist bag.
When the agents were investigating to clarify the facts, they found that many of the phones appeared in the database as stolen, prompting the seizure of all the devices, as well as the cash and the arrest of the accused.
The detainee, along with the procedures conducted, has been placed at the disposal of the Court of Instruction No. 4 of San Cristóbal de La Laguna.
