The construction of the Candelaria municipal indoor swimming pool is now fully funded. The Plenary approved yesterday the €3,330,497 that was needed to complete the total cost of €7,125,505 for this project, which has had €3,330,497 secured for the past year. This funding guarantees the execution of an infrastructure whose application began more than a decade ago.
With the support of PSOE, PP, CC, and Vox (17 votes) and the abstention of Unidas Se Puede, the Plenary approved yesterday €11,823,707 corresponding to the cash surplus, which will be used for the completion of about thirty projects, including the municipal indoor swimming pool, to be located on the site opposite the Punta Larga Early Childhood and Primary Education Centre, at the start of Rambla Los Menceyes.
Project Details
The project includes a covered pool with two multipurpose and teaching pools with dimensions of 25 by 12.5 metres and 10 by 12.5 metres, respectively; a gym, changing rooms, and a car park with space for 59 vehicles, along with outdoor parking spaces. The upper floor will house a cardio-weights area with fixed equipment and activity rooms aimed at various audiences.

Some Issues
The Candelaria municipal indoor swimming pool will be built on the same 3,210 square metre site reserved for the project approved in 2015, opposite the Post Office. On 30 October 2017, the First Section of the Administrative Litigation Chamber of the High Court of Justice of the Canary Islands (TSJC) annulled the award of the contract, which had been assigned to the Unión Temporal de Empresas (UTE) Centro Deportivo Candelaria on 30 December 2025. The Court ruled that the project (to be developed across five levels) had to be excluded as it broke the terms of the competition and local planning by exceeding the space allocated for commercial use as stipulated in both documents, according to the ruling.
At this point, on 18 September 2018, the Procurement Board declared the bidding procedure void as it had previously excluded the bid submitted by Syocsa–Inarsa SA, the second highest scoring tender.
Lower Cost
At that time, the construction cost was €6,015,000, with a 20-month execution period and an annual fee of €12,831. The awarded company was to manage this complex for 35 years.
Following these setbacks, the municipal government led by Mari Brito is initiating the process for the physical execution of this significant project for Candelaria.
