The City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has completed the rehabilitation works on the bridges that span the Barranco de Santos, between Plaza de Europa and Avenida Marítima. As a result, normal traffic flow has been restored in the area, while enhancements and final touches will continue to be carried out in the pedestrian section over the coming weeks.
This was reported by the council in a press release, where it noted that the works began in August 2024 and were declared an emergency due to the risk of structural collapse of the bridges. The project, with an investment of over £2.3 million, has been completed within the planned 12-month timeframe.
The Mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, expressed his satisfaction with the completion of the works, stating that these actions were “essential” to ensure the safety of one of the key points for pedestrian and vehicular mobility in the city.
Meanwhile, the Councillor for Works and Infrastructure, Javier Rivero, highlighted the undertaking of this “integral” intervention to ensure long-term stability. The works involved reinforcing the most critical parts of the bridges, such as the pillars and the structures that support them.
In a second phase, a complete replacement of the deck of the bridge on Avenida Marítima was carried out to guarantee its strength and durability against the elements and the marine environment.
According to the capital’s council, the actions were justified in municipal reports that warned of an advanced state of corrosion in the structure’s reinforcements due to runoff and the marine environment. Thus, a first phase commenced focusing on the structural repair of the lower sections of the decks and the remodelling of the pillars.
Subsequently, starting in January, the second phase was addressed, which involved replacing the deck of the bridge between Plaza de Europa and the skating area on Avenida Marítima. This led to traffic diversions and the closure of pedestrian access in the square.
