Lope Afonso: “We confirm the determination of the Cabildo in the fight against gender violence, working in networks and providing comprehensive and specialised services”
The Vice President of the Cabildo, Lope Afonso, and the Councillor for Social Action, Águeda Fumero, accompanied by regional, insular, and local authorities, inaugurated a new specialised office on Friday 18th. This office will provide two services aimed at the comprehensive attention to gender violence and sexual violence.
This new facility will initially support 21 women through the Insular Service for Comprehensive Care for Victims of Gender Violence (SIAM) and 50 through the Centre for Attention and Specialised Intervention for Victims of Sexual Gender Violence (CAVIS), as well as 19 girls, boys, and adolescents.
This space will shorten response times for women and expand the network of resources, adding to the 11 existing SIAM offices across the insular territory. Additionally, CAVIS extends its coverage and will no longer be insular, with two distinct teams and a third team to be established with the upcoming opening of the southern CAVIS.
During the inauguration, Lope Afonso stated that “with the launch of this resource, we confirm the Cabildo’s commitment to putting all determination into the fight against gender violence, through networked work, and providing comprehensive and specialised services.” Councillor Águeda Fumero agreed, stating, “Our goal is to respond to women victims of gender violence, with staff who listen to and defend their rights.”
The office has a multidisciplinary team of nine professionals, including lawyers, psychologists, social workers, and an administrative assistant.
Furthermore, Águeda Fumero highlighted that the office is fully accessible due to collaboration with Sinpromi. “We have worked to ensure that any woman victim of gender violence, regardless of whether she has a disability, can access these services, as can her children,” she detailed.
An accessible parking space has been secured; there is adapted access to the office; a waiting area with adequate space and furniture; an accessible information point with a hearing loop and adapted signage; an accessible toilet with a system for ostomised patients; auditory and visual signage; and the use of pictograms.
Both the Vice President and the Councillor emphasised that “this is one of the milestones of the mandate, where we set the goal of opening more offices and improving continuous operational protocols for staff.” They added that “the next step will be to open a new office in southern Tenerife in the coming months and another in the La Orotava area during 2026. This will enable us to enhance the quality response to women victims of gender violence.”
The Cabildo of Tenerife reminds everyone of the importance of calling 112 in any emergency situation, from where various resources available from the Gender Violence Organic Unit of the IASS can be activated. Additionally, any woman can consult the unit’s website (https://www.iass.es/violencia-de-genero) or contact via email mujer@uvg.es to receive attention and advice regarding the different services available.
