The General Directorate of Emergencies has declared a wildfire risk alert since 11:00 this Saturday in El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria. At 10:00, they activated a pre-alert for winds from the north and northeast of up to 70 km/h.
The wildfire risk alert affects El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria. On this island, it applies to areas over 800 metres in altitude to the north and over 400 metres on the other slopes.
Less Heat
Although the episode of high temperatures has ended, the vegetation needs time to recover from the intense meteorological stress of recent days to return to normal summer conditions, explains Emergencies.
The only incident that occurred during this heatwave affected Juncalillo, in the summit of the Gran Canaria municipality of Gáldar, where six hectares of grassland burned. The fire was brought under control in just one day by the extinguishing services of the Cabildo, becoming the first forest fire of the summer.
For these days, maximum temperatures are expected to be between 28 and 34º C in the midlands and high areas of the east, south, and west of Gran Canaria, and between 24 and 30º C on the other islands.
Wind
The pre-alert for winds affects El Hierro (extreme west, high areas, and southeast of the island), La Palma (Garafía, Fuencaliente, and Mazo), La Gomera (Vallehermoso, San Sebastián de la Gomera, and the summit), Tenerife (Teno Massif, Candelaria, El Rosario, the southern slope of La Laguna and Santa Cruz de Tenerife – high areas and southern slope of the Anaga Massif), and Gran Canaria (Agaete, Artenara, La Aldea, Santa Lucía, Agüimes, Ingenio).
In these areas, moderate northerly and northeasterly winds are expected, with locally strong and very strong gusts likely reaching or exceeding 50 or 70 km/h, reports EFE.
Additionally, since 10:00 this Saturday, the Canary Government has declared the end of the high temperature alert that affected the entire autonomous community.
