Over 500 residents of Laguna enjoy summer activities organised by Citizen Participation

The municipal initiative, taking place in Punta del Hidalgo and Bajamar, promotes active ageing, outdoor exercise, and the creation of social networks among the elderly in the municipality.

Over 500 people from the municipality are participating this summer in activities organised by the Citizen Participation Area of the La Laguna Council at the pools of Bajamar and Punta del Hidalgo. This initiative aims to enhance the physical and emotional wellbeing of people aged over 50 or with reduced mobility, as well as to encourage encounters, coexistence, and an active community life.

The sessions, which began in early July and will continue until the end of August, allow residents from all towns and neighbourhoods in the municipality to enjoy healthy leisure activities in a privileged, outdoor setting, with all safety measures and assistance in place.

The Councillor for Citizen Participation, Fran Hernández, has emphasised the importance of such proposals aimed at those over 50 and with reduced mobility, to “promote active citizenship at all stages of life”.

“These activities are not just a way to get out of the house and exercise, which is already important,” Hernández explained, “but they are also a tool for participation, relationships, and community. Many residents reconnect, support each other, and feel active.”

The programme, which consists of eight sessions spread over July and August, is part of the municipal strategy to promote citizen participation from an intergenerational and inclusive perspective.

“From Citizen Participation, we will continue to support these types of actions that generate health, wellbeing, and social connections because we are convinced that a strong municipality is one where all people are valued, participate, and enjoy,” added the councillor.

The activities have 500 spots available and have seen high demand, which, according to Hernández, “demonstrates a real desire and need for such proposals.” La Laguna, he reminded, “has a very active population, eager to continue contributing and enjoying.”
