Canarias Jazz & More Reaches Its Midpoint with Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Rita Payés, and a Dozen Concerts
The International Festival Canarias Jazz & Más Músicas Creativas reaches the midpoint of its 34th edition with 13 concerts and talks bringing two of the most anticipated artists to the islands, Gonzalo Rubalcaba and Rita Payés, alongside acts such as Arin Keshishi, Ariel Brínguez, and pianist Krzysztof Kobyliński.

The central week of Canarias Jazz & Más is set in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Palma, and La Gomera, filling iconic spots across the four islands with music and sharing its energy in auditoriums, theatres, and squares.

With the programme fully underway, fans of the genre can now look forward to the arrival of the award-winning Cuban artist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, who will perform at the Teatro Leal in La Laguna on Thursday the 17th and at the Teatro Pérez Galdós in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on Friday the 18th.

This Wednesday the 16th, the event features Rita Payés at the Espacio Cultural CajaCanarias in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and piano maestro Krzysztof Kobyliński at the Casa de Colón in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, both at 8:00 PM.

Prior to Kobyliński’s concert, there will be a free talk at 7:00 PM titled Canarias + Festivales Sostenibles, addressing the implementation of sustainability policies in the production of large cultural events.

A living legend of jazz, Gonzalo Rubalcaba boasts a record of three Grammy Awards and four Latin Grammy Awards, having been nominated 21 times, with a musical career that knows no bounds.

For Canarias Jazz & Más, this Thursday and Friday, he will be joined by one of the most promising bassists of the moment, Matt Brewer, and Grammy-nominated drummer Eric Harland to create Gonzalo Rubalcaba ‘Trio d’Été’ with Matt Brewer & Eric Harland.

Canarias Jazz & Más welcomes this week one of the most acclaimed national artists of the current scene, Rita Payés, who at just 25 years old is making waves by revolutionising the genre with her unique sensitivity.

The artist from Vilassar de Mar will touch hearts at the Espacio Cultural CajaCanarias in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on Wednesday the 16th; at the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on Thursday the 17th; and at Plaza España in Los Llanos de Aridane in La Palma on Friday the 18th.

For the weekend, Arin Keshishi Quintet, Daahoud Salim Quintet, and Ariel Brínguez Quintet will provide a wide range of sounds to showcase the versatility of jazz and creative music in all its glory.

Arin Keshishi Quintet and Daahoud Salim Quintet will be the perfect duo for two rooted concerts at the Plaza Ciudad del Auditorio de Tenerife on Friday the 18th and in the municipal park of Santa Brígida (Gran Canaria) on the 19th, both with free entry.

Arin Keshishi Quintet is jazz with an oriental hue, infused with Middle Eastern sounds and the modern expression of its composer, Arin Keshishi, who is also a bassist, producer, and artistic director.

Keshishi has successfully balanced his personal influences with the European sounds of Amsterdam, where he resides, forged with a versatility that has made him a master of jazz fusion, as well as pop, rock, classical music, and folklore.

Meanwhile, Daahoud Salim Quintet will introduce new venues with a concert that promotes energy and spirituality, promising an unforgettable live experience that has already toured significant venues and festivals worldwide.

Plaza España in Los Llanos de Aridane (La Palma) on Friday the 18th and Santa Cruz de Tenerife on Saturday the 19th will firmly establish the quintet with Ariel Brínguez Quintet at the Plaza Ciudad del Auditorio de Tenerife, heralding a new era for Cuban saxophone.

They will be preceded on stage by Alexis Alonso Sextet, a Canary Islands representative for the weekend with his avant-garde vision of jazz, offering an intimate, personal, and exciting proposal.

Canarian jazz will also be present at Playa de Santiago in La Gomera on Sunday the 20th of July with Anna Rodríguez & Three, a Canarian quartet that fuses jazz, funk, boleros, morna, and even influences from R&B, soul, and flamenco fusion.

The 34th edition of Canarias Jazz Más reaches all eight islands thanks to the collaboration of various institutions and companies that make this musical gathering possible.
