A cyclist in his 50s had to be urgently transferred to Hospiten Sur hospital after suffering three consecutive cardiac arrests upon finishing the mountain race ‘VI Amarilla Extreme’, held this Sunday, 13th July, in the municipality of San Miguel de Abona.
The event, organised by the Club Ciclista Iirichen, commenced at 8:30am, featuring a route of 60 km. According to one of the witnesses present, the participant began to feel unwell just after crossing the finish line: “After reaching the finish line and putting down his bike, the cyclist started to show signs of distress, when he experienced his first cardiac arrest,” he explains.
Fortunately, among the other racers was a doctor who did not hesitate to intervene immediately and began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation. “Thanks to one of the cyclists being a doctor, he started to perform resuscitation compressions,” the same source details, noting that up to three ambulances arrived at the scene, “until a medicalised ambulance arrived” which managed to stabilise the affected individual and transfer him to the hospital.
