Maritime Rescue Recovers a Body Approximately 100 Metres Off the Coast of Candelaria

Maritime Rescue has recovered the lifeless body of a 55-year-old fisherman who fell into the sea off the coast of Candelaria (Tenerife), according to information from the Canary Islands Emergency Coordination Centre 1-1-2.

The events occurred on the afternoon of this Tuesday at the said coast, where resources from Maritime Rescue were dispatched after 1-1-2 received an alert informing that a fisherman had fallen into the sea from the shoreline, near the basilica area, and was floating face down approximately 100 metres away.

Specifically, Maritime Rescue activated the aquatic rescue resources of Tamadaya Emergencies, based in Candelaria, which dispatched a jet ski to the area that located the victim’s body and transported it to shore, where personnel from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) were present, along with a doctor and a nurse from the local health centre.

The medics confirmed that the fisherman was in cardiac arrest, so they performed advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation for nearly an hour; however, it ultimately proved unsuccessful and the SUC doctor confirmed the man’s death.

Tenerife Firefighters and beach rescue personnel were also present at the scene, along with local police and Civil Guard officers, who took charge of the corresponding proceedings.
