The strong winds being recorded since Saturday in Tenerife are causing the first operational problems at airports, particularly in Tenerife.
According to Air Traffic Controllers, the Northern aerodrome of the Island is the most affected, as the phenomenon known as shear is combined with the near-perpetual fog over the runway.
As a result, the crew of domestic flights departing from places like Madrid, Valencia or Barcelona decided to divert to Tenerife South Airport to attempt to land.
More Problems
However, the situation at Reina Sofia is not much different. The wind is also blowing strongly in that area, and the shear is also causing operational problems at Tenerife South Airport.
In this case, some international flights arriving from Bristol or London, whose crews opted to divert to the alternative airport, most likely Gran Canaria, after attempts to land.
AENA also warns of adverse weather conditions at the Tenerife airport and recommends “checking with the airline regarding the status of the flight.”
“Delays, diversions or cancellations may occur. If you are travelling, please check the status of your flight before heading to the airport,” adds the Canary airline Binter, which provides a link to verify routes.
Shear
Wind shear occurs due to a sudden change in its speed or direction. It is one of the most dangerous meteorological effects for aircraft, as it can affect flight speed, both during take-off and landing.
