Baby Born During Traffic Jam on the TF-5

Despite the promise made during the electoral campaign by the current president of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Rosa Dávila (Canarian Coalition), to eliminate queues in just 90 days, the traffic jams on the island have not ceased and, in fact, according to the allegations from PSOE, have even increased. The situation on the roads is such that unusual circumstances arise, such as a baby being born in the middle of a traffic jam on the TF-5, the northern motorway, where congestion is daily.

This was detailed on Thursday by the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, which reported that the teleassistance service of the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) attended to two births remotely that occurred in June, one of them in Lanzarote and the other during a traffic jam on the aforementioned TF-5.

This unusual birth took place on the morning of June 23, when the coordinating doctor of the SUC received a call from a couple heading to the hospital who got caught in a traffic jam on the TF-5, near Tacoronte.

The woman, who was at term, was in labour and in the full expulsive phase, Health detailed.

The SUC doctor stayed on the phone, monitoring the progression of the delivery and the final moment, the birth, which occurred in the middle of the traffic jam. The doctor instructed the mother to clean the baby’s head and place it on her chest, skin to skin, and to keep it warm.

Meanwhile, a medicalized ambulance from the SUC, activated from the operational room, headed to the meeting point with the vehicle, near Tenerife North Airport, about six kilometres from Tacoronte.

The ambulance staff took over the care of the mother and the newborn and transported them to the hospital, where they were admitted in good general condition.

Another birth via teleassistance

In the case of Lanzarote, the teleassistance for the birth took place on June 9 at 4:00 AM, when 112 received a call to assist a 37-year-old woman with a term pregnancy in the municipality of Tías.

A basic life support ambulance from the SUC was dispatched to the scene, as the medicalized ambulance was attending to another call, and its staff reported upon arrival that the woman had begun the expulsive phase.

The coordinating nurse of the 112 room gave the necessary instructions to the ambulance staff to assist with the delivery and birth.

The woman gave birth to a boy in the basic life support ambulance while they were en route to the Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital in Arrecife.

It was an uncomplicated birth, and both the mother and the newborn were in good condition and were admitted to the hospital.
