The Provincial Association of Gas, Water, Thermal and Fluid Installers of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Apigaste) issued a warning this Monday about the so-called “plumber scam”, where fake technicians simulate water inspections in homes to carry out thefts.
Occasionally, the perpetrators of this scam, Apigaste indicates in a statement, even cause chemical reactions to alarm residents, facilitating thefts or frauds.
The association laments that these incidents “tarnish the name” of the trade and urges the public to seek out “professionals who are genuinely registered, with training and legal authorisation.”
Pedro Armas, president of Apigaste and executive of Femete, emphasises the need always to demand professional accreditation and verify that technicians belong to authorised and legally registered installation companies with the Industry area of the Government of the Canary Islands.
If not, he advises rejecting any supposed technician who cannot clearly demonstrate their professional identification or administrative authorisation to practise. “If in doubt, the most responsible action is not to allow access to the dwelling,” Armas emphasises.
