COASTLINE: The Restoration of El Médano’s Boardwalk Demands Six Months of Works in Granadilla

El Médano benefits from a set of works that will refresh this local tourism spot, mainly, and of the Island. The Granadilla de Abona Council begins improvements of the iconic wooden promenade of El Médano, an action that is part of the Tourism Sustainability Plan in Destinations (PSTD) Granadilla tanto por disfrutar, funded with Next Generation EU funds. Within this framework, the bike lane and the coastal accessibility plan are included, with an investment exceeding 2.7 million euros.

The Promenade

In the case of the wooden promenade, the work, much demanded by the public, includes the comprehensive repair of the wood that extends from the central square, in front of the Hotel Médano, to the Leocadio Machado area (heading South). It will be executed in two phases over the next six months, with an investment exceeding half a million euros. Upon completing this stage, a third and final phase will go to tender, which will complete the route to the Los Balos area, thus avoiding congestion of access points during a high tourist influx period like summer. The work includes, in addition to replacing the wood, the improvement of public furniture to provide greater aesthetic uniformity, comfort, and accessibility to this coastal area.

“It is a much-anticipated project, planned and budgeted during our previous term.”

José Domingo Regalado

— Mayor of Granadilla de Abona

The mayor of Granadilla de Abona, José Domingo Regalado, emphasizes that “this is a much-anticipated project, planned and budgeted during our previous term. It is a significant investment to improve pedestrian safety and renew the image of our coast, thus addressing a historical demand of our residents.”

Marcos Antonio Rodríguez, Councillor for Works, argues that this renovation of the El Médano wooden promenade is “not just an aesthetic improvement, but a necessary intervention to guarantee the safety of those who traverse it daily. It is a space widely used by locals and tourists, and it deserved an integral intervention that we are finally executing.” One of the keys to the intervention is the use of durable materials and a design of elements that provide greater comfort for pedestrians. Progress is also being made on the drafting of the Magallanes square rehabilitation project.

Bike Lane

Within the same PSTD framework, the Council has also started the works of the El Médano bike lane, with an investment of 1.7 million euros and an estimated execution time of eight months. The route, which covers 2,781 m², will connect strategic areas such as La Trinchera, El Cabezo, Los Martines, Ensenada Pelada and Médano Beach, with a dual-direction path 2.20 meters wide, paving, signage, and efficient lighting.

Accessibility Plan

The Council has also approved the award of phases I, II and IV of the Accessibility Plan for El Médano and Los Abrigos, with a budget of over 530,000 euros and a seven-month execution period. The works will take place on the paseo Atlántico, Evaristo Gómez González Street, and Estrella de Mar Street, and will result in a comprehensive transformation of these urban spaces. Interventions include the installation of accessible furniture, road safety elements, and improvements in pedestrian connectivity, linking key areas such as the Plaza Roja with the paseo Atlántico and the football field area with the central square of El Médano. Progress is also being made on the drafting of the Magallanes square rehabilitation project.

A Commitment

The mayor highlights that “this plan reflects our commitment to accessibility and improving the urban environment, ensuring more comfortable public spaces for everyone. This initiative, along with others, reflects our commitment to a greener and safer future for all. It is a clear commitment to quality of life and tourism competitiveness.” Marcos Antonio Rodríguez adds that “the main objective is to expand the range of sustainable mobility, attract new visitor profiles, reduce polluting emissions, and unify our territory. The actions prioritise pedestrians over vehicular traffic, improve gardens and create unique shade areas and platforms.”

The Strategy

With these actions, the Granadilla de Abona Council consolidates a comprehensive strategy for the modernisation of its coastal front, improving mobility, accessibility, and urban quality. The commitment to sustainable, responsible, and inclusive tourism is reflected in these investments co-financed by the European Union, which not only benefit visitors but also enhance the quality of life of the municipality’s residents.
