LGBTIQA+ Groups Urge Crowds to Fill Santa Cruz de Tenerife Streets in Defence of Rights “Against the Resurgence of Fascism”

The LGBTIQA+ associations of Tenerife (Diversas, Libertrans, Transwomen, Transboys, Aperttura, Fundación Pedro Zerolo, and Asociación LGBTIQ+ Tacoronte Comarca de Acentejo) join once again this year to call for the island Pride march taking place on Saturday 28th June, at 18:00, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, under the slogan Against the resurgent fascism, pride that resists.

The groups explained in a statement the route of the march, which will start at Plaza Weyler and continue along Calle Méndez Núñez, the Ramblas of Santa Cruz, Avenida Francisco La Roche, ending at Plaza del Cabildo.

Afterwards, participants will be invited to Plaza de La Candelaria for the reading of the manifesto prepared by the groups on the stage set up for Festivalullo, in this area of the Tenerife capital.

The groups note that there will be two significant stops along the route; the first in Parque García Sanabria to remember the place where the first Pride march began in 1978, and the second at the Monument to the Fallen Angel as a still present vestige of fascism that, “in the face of which we can only resist with pride,” the groups emphasize in the note.

The convening associations state that this action aims to “make visible that Tenerife’s LGBTIQA+ Pride has memory and will not allow even a step back against the resurgent fascism with hate speeches that attack the rights of the most vulnerable people, which is why we aim to fill the capital’s streets to show that many of us resist and insist on this collective struggle,” the groups assert.

Furthermore, they highlight that “hundreds of social, feminist, environmental, activist, union, and insular political parties have been invited to ensure the demonstration is massive and fills the streets of Santa Cruz with the demand for diversity that must be protected as a right for all.”

The associations predict that it will be a “historic and massive” demonstration, returning to the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife after many years.

Thus, the groups call on citizens to participate “en masse” in the demonstration, “whether they belong to the group or not, because the resurgent fascism threatens everyone, and in response, we must reivindicate that pride insists and resists,” the associations conclude.
