The nationalist Alejandro Herrera took the mayoral office of La Guancha on Tuesday, 10th June. Canary Coalition thus regains the Mayorship of this northern municipality of Tenerife after several terms in the hands of the Popular Party.
After receiving seven votes in his favour, Herrera became mayor following the resignation of the popular Antonio Hernández last month, citing personal reasons. This resignation paved the way for a change of government in the municipality. With the same number of councillors in the PP and CC, possibilities opened up in the local Corporation. The question was who the sole PSOE councillor – who had so far been in the governing team – would support and what councillor María Auxiliadora Marrero, whom Hernández had recently dismissed, would vote for.
The new mayor stated that he takes on the responsibility with enthusiasm and a desire to work for the residents of La Guancha. Although he recognised that only 23 months remain before elections are held again, so the objectives will need to adapt to these timeframes. The first will be to approve the municipal budget, extended since 2022, for which he will need to seek external support, as he currently plans to govern in a minority with only the six nationalist councillors.
