Lorena Socas will become the second female mayor of La Guancha on Tuesday, 10th June. The extraordinary council meeting is scheduled to begin at nine in the morning, where she will take over from her party colleague, Antonio Hernández Domínguez, who announced his resignation from the position on 27th May, which he formalised before the council last Monday.

Second Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Heritage, Tourism, Festivals, Crafts, Internal Affairs, and Parks and Gardens, Lorena Socas has accompanied the former mayor in the municipal candidacies of the Popular Party since 2011, when she was listed at position 11. In the 2015 electoral list, she held position two, which she maintained in the 2019 and 2023 slates.

The Pact Continues

Tomorrow, the La Guancha Council must choose who will replace Antonio Hernández. Lorena Socas will retain the Mayorship for the Popular Party under the agreement that the PP has with the PSOE, which will not be altered by this change. The acting mayor, the socialist councillor María José García, will continue serving as Deputy Mayor.

Antonio Hernández will resign from his councillor position once the structure of the new government group is established, as he announced 13 days ago. “I will withdraw at that time from all political responsibilities I have been assuming to date,” he stated in his public resignation.

Personal Reasons

Antonio Hernández stated that the reasons leading him to resign from the position are strictly personal. However, he has differences with the leadership of his party. He has been one of the absent faces from significant events held by the Popular Party in Tenerife. This includes the presentation of the Active Municipalities Plan by the PP president in the Canary Islands and Vice President of the regional government, Manuel Domínguez, and the proclamation of Lope Afonso as the island president of the conservative formation.
