La Orotava Sustainable 2025 is the programme developed by the Villa with the aim of promoting sustainability, recycling, energy efficiency, and renewable energy; traditions as a form of valuing cultural heritage; improving the social welfare of the population through social integration, as well as encouraging digitalisation and new communication technologies and literacy of vulnerable groups; improving rural and urban spaces through the control of invasive species and advancing the employability of those participating in the project.
For this, the Cabildo provides 340,000 euros which contribute to the recovery of employment which, in the case of the Orotava municipality, is reflected in the reduction from 8,000 unemployed people in 2020 to 3,500 currently. The mayor, Francisco Linares, noted that collaboration between institutions is one of the factors contributing to this progress.
Accompanied by the island councillor for Education and Employment, Efraín Medina, he visited the projects that are being developed. Medina recalled that it is not just another employment programme but «a comprehensive commitment to the future for unemployed people who will work on projects linked to local sustainable development, where they will be trained and gain work experience to improve their future employment opportunities».
In these initiatives, priority is given to young people under 30 and long-term unemployed individuals. Likewise, women must account for at least 50% of the hires. Thus, the participants will be trained and will be able to access a work contract in their municipalities to work on projects of local and social interest. The other significant aspect is the opportunity it represents for the municipalities to carry out local projects aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals with qualified and unqualified personnel to enhance the development and execution of new initiatives. n
