The Adeje Town Council has announced the temporary closure of swimming in the El Puertito area after detecting unusual parameters in the latest water quality tests. This precautionary action is part of the established public health safety protocol.
The local authority has reported the issue to the relevant administrations and activated the appropriate protocol for informing, monitoring, and closing the beach. The reopening will depend on the results of new samples confirming the water is safe for recreational use.
This closure adds to similar recent incidents in the area. Back on 13th May, the Town Council temporarily closed the Troya I and II beaches after elevated levels of enterococcus and escherichia coli were detected. Immediate actions were taken then to protect public health, including taking new samples and reviewing potential contamination sources.
The council assures that so far, no direct cause for the positive test results has been identified. There have been no faults found in local infrastructure, nor have any discharges or issues been detected at the facilities of the Island Water Council.
Other potential causes are under consideration, such as tidal influences that, according to some reports, might be bringing contamination from other coastal points or offshore, especially at this time of year when similar incidents have occurred in past years.
In this light, the Adeje Town Council is contemplating requesting an external investigation to determine the exact origin of these water quality disruptions, aiming to prevent future closures and provide assurance to residents and visitors.
Finally, the council has sent a reassuring message to the public, emphasising that all actions taken are strictly precautionary and that, so far, these measures have effectively maintained safety along the municipality’s coast.
