TENERIFE TRANSPORTATION | Tenerife Drives Change in Public Transit with Increased Passengers, New Buses, and Sustainable Mobility
Tenerife strengthens its commitment to a modern, efficient, and sustainable public transport system. By the end of May, TITSA has surpassed 35.5 million passengers, which is two million more than the same period last year. This increase reflects the growing confidence of citizens in a service that is undergoing profound transformation. This progress is driven by the Modernization and Reinforcement Plan, with a total investment of 113.4 million euros between 2024 and 2026, which plans to add over 300 new buses. The goal: to reinforce routes, increase frequencies, and renew the fleet to meet rising demand and move towards more sustainable mobility. In this context, the Government Council has approved a new investment of 17 million euros for the acquisition of 70 new buses to be in service by 2026. This amount is in addition to the eight million already allocated in the 2025 budget, reaching 25 million committed, out of the total 31 million needed to fund this second batch. Presentation of the latest new Titsa buses / Andrés GutiérrezOne of the most notable milestones of this renewal will be the incorporation, for the first time, of 100% electric interurban buses. These units will cover daily routes of up to 310 kilometers between municipalities, becoming the first real experience of zero-emission interurban transport in the Canary Islands. The eight electric buses will be integrated into the following lines in the north of the island, with origin and destination at the La Laguna Interchange:
Line 051: La Laguna – Tejina – Tacoronte – Los Naranjeros – Guamasa – Cruz Chica – La Laguna
Line 057: La Laguna – Cruz Chica – Guamasa – Los Naranjeros – Tacoronte – Valle Guerra – Tejina – Tegueste – Las Canteras – La Laguna
In addition to their 100% sustainable nature, these new units will offer zero emissions, less noise pollution, and reduced environmental impact, adapting to the real connection needs between urban centers. The renewal also includes 13 double-decker buses and others up to 15 meters in length, many destined for the south of Tenerife, where the most saturated routes are located. This measure will allow doubling the capacity per vehicle, from 65 to 110 seats, resulting in a significant improvement in the service’s comfort and efficiency. With these actions, Tenerife consolidates its leadership in sustainable mobility, committing to more modern, accessible public transport aligned with future challenges.
