Prosecutor Seeks Two-Year Sentence for Woman in Tenerife for Leaving Stepmother Destitute

Without heart and soul. This could define the actions of a woman accused of embezzlement for leaving her stepmother in destitution, forcing her to sell her jewelry and seek food aid from the Red Cross. It happened in Tenerife, and the Prosecutor’s Office is requesting a two-year prison sentence and a compensation of more than 13,000 euros, including the misappropriated amount plus accrued interest and the value of moral damages from the date these acts were allegedly committed.

The trial, which was supposed to take place this Tuesday in the Fifth Section of the Provincial Court of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, was suspended without the hearing being held. The accused should have been the daughter of the victim’s deceased husband. The accused’s stepmother had authorized her to use her credit cards solely to cover various payments, such as the rent of the apartment or cash withdrawals for the exclusive use of the cardholder. This was done due to the trust built over years of living together during the marriage with the accused’s father, since she was a minor.

The Public Prosecutor argues that the accused, with the intention of gaining wealth, took advantage of this trust to carry out transactions amounting to 7,870 euros, of which she only gave about 2,000 to her stepmother. Additionally, she used a credit card linked to the latter’s bank account to make movements amounting to slightly more than 1,200 euros.

As a result of this situation, the victim, believing she was meeting her financial obligations, suddenly found herself with multiple debts. These included unpaid rent on her home and the cost of home care services for the elderly, leading to the suspension of such assistance.

Ultimately, the woman was forced to sell her jewelry to avoid eviction and turn to Red Cross aid to meet her basic food needs.
