The expenses incurred from the incineration of 45 containers has now surpassed 47,800 euros for La Laguna since 2023, as the City Council reported in a statement on Friday.
The local authority has condemned a recent act of vandalism involving the burning of a container on Thursday night, situated in front of the Tejina Health Centre.
The Councillor for Citizen Security, Badel Albelo, has characterised the incidents as “extremely serious” and confirmed that the Local Police are intensifying their investigative efforts to identify those responsible and present them to the judicial authority. “We do not only refer to a criminal act; this represents a direct threat to the safety of individuals and to property, including vehicles and other assets.”
“Such conduct jeopardises community harmony, and its perpetrators must consider the legal repercussions they will face,” declared Albelo. “We must adopt a zero-tolerance stance. We will pursue all necessary measures to ensure these acts do not go unpunished and that those who disrupt neighbourhood safety are held accountable for their actions,” the mayor added.
The Councillor for Municipal Services, Fran Hernández, expressed his dismay over the significant financial repercussions these actions impose on public finances, necessitating the diversion of resources intended for the enhancement of cleaning services. “As of 2025, four containers have already been set ablaze, costing more than 4,900 euros. Since 2023, the financial toll has reached 47,845 euros. This is funds that could have been directed towards expanding the collection network or updating equipment; instead, we are forced to allocate it to replace what others have destroyed,” he explained.
The City Council seeks public cooperation, urging anyone who has witnessed these events or possesses valuable information to contact the local police through official channels to facilitate the investigation and curb these unacceptable behaviours.
