Taxi drivers have cancelled the demonstration planned for the 15th at the Santa Cruz City Council, which was organised by the La Guild association, in protest against the removal of key stops in the city centre, affected by the construction of the cycle lane that extends along several main thoroughfares of the city.
In particular, the stops impacted were those on Bravo Murillo Avenue, adjacent to Plaza de España, and the one at Prince’s Square, next to the Inside hotel.
“The City of Santa Cruz is exploring potential solutions”
The union president, Zebenzui Pérez, stated yesterday that “we have decided to suspend the protest because the City Council of Santa Cruz is considering possible solutions we have suggested, along with other alternatives. In the coming days, we will meet with the councillors for public services and mobility, Carlos Tarife and Evelyn Alonso, to collaborate and reach a consensus”.
Tarife, for his part, noted that last Thursday a meeting with Elite Taxi was held, where it was suggested to enlarge the stop at Plaza de España on General Gutiérrez Street. “In addition, there is the union’s proposal to shorten the layout of the cycle lane until the pedestrian crossing located near the rear of the post office, at the corner with Bravo Murillo.”

Additionally, the councillor mentioned that another agreement would revolve around “installing sensors at the double stop at Prince’s Square, as well as at San Clemente Street, which will have a green light to indicate available spaces, allowing another taxi to approach the stop”.
Concerning this passenger pick-up area, the union proposed that the stop at Prince’s Square, commonly referred to as the Inside, be modified to accommodate two taxis instead of the current single vehicle, while also ensuring that pedestrian access and traffic signals are functional.
From the mobility department, it was indicated that these adjustments will be implemented once the personal mobility network works are completed.
