He Cabildo de Tenerife serves as a pivotal institution with “a driving role in the economy and employment” of the Canary Islands. This forms the foundation of ten resolution proposals from the Popular Party for the extraordinary plenary session (10:00 hours, plenary hall) on the island debate next Monday, the 5th. These proposals underpin policy outlines covering mental health, productive sectors, social issues, and connectivity. Lope Afonso, leader of the Popular Party, states that the motions “aim to enhance the quality of life for people in Tenerife” with a “social impact that benefits citizens.”
Local Products
The PP leader in the Cabildo, concerning the productive sectors, asserts “unwavering support for local producers against international commercial threats, particularly those targeting the primary sector of Tenerife.”
Mental Health
The social sphere holds particular significance in the proposals put forth by the PP, which will highlight the necessity for a mental health action plan aimed at the younger population, involving various administrations and specialised organisations.
The Elderly
Lope Afonso reveals that “we focus on solutions for elderly individuals facing extreme residential exclusion, for which we propose a dedicated programme that enhances prevention as a means to provide effective care.”
ALS
The Popular Party will also call on the Government of the Canary Islands to establish specialized units for ALS in the main hospitals across the archipelago to ensure “the proper implementation of the Comprehensive Care Law on all islands.”
Housing
Lope Afonso emphasizes that “housing will play a critical role in our proposals, as it has become one of the foremost concerns of Tenerife.” Consequently, we will present a proposal urging the State Government to “implement urgent measures ensuring access to housing in Tenerife through a public guarantee system for working individuals, addressing the adverse effects of the Government of Spain’s Housing Law.”
Tourism
Additionally, the Popular leader indicates that “we will propose that the Cabildo expresses its institutional support for the tourism sector, which is strategic for the island’s economy,” as it accounts for 35% of the insular GDP and provides direct employment to over 40% of the active population. Thus, we “commit to bolstering support, promotion, financing, and innovation policies in the tourism sector of Tenerife within an increasingly dynamic and demanding international landscape.”
Mobility
Mobility and connectivity will be tackled by the PP of the Cabildo de Tenerife, proposing that the State guarantees specific compensation payments for the 75% discounts on air and sea travel for Canarian residents.
Railways
Furthermore, the Popular Party urges the Government of Spain to “prioritise a specific allocation in the General State Budgets for developing railway infrastructure in Tenerife, establishing a timeline for budgetary commitments to execute a tram project based on criteria of sustainable mobility, territorial cohesion, and environmental respect.”
Cultural Heritage
The Popular Party Group in the Cabildo de Tenerife will also call on the Government of Spain to facilitate the return of the Xoxo Guanche de Erques to Tenerife, ensuring its final placement in the Museum of Nature and Archaeology (MUNA).
Sports Pavilion
Finally, the PP will advocate for conducting a feasibility study addressing the requirements for the planning and development of a large-capacity and versatile insular sports pavilion intended to host sports and cultural events.
