The Cabildo de Tenerife, via Tourism of Tenerife, is showcasing the island as a tourist hotspot at the Mutua Tennis Madrid Open Tournament. From April 21 to May 4, a variety of activities are taking place to demonstrate the nearly 400,000 attendees the holiday options the island provides.
In a statement, Lope Afonso, the Vice President and Tourism Minister of the Cabildo, highlighted “the significance” of the collaboration between tourism and sport as “a strategic axis” to position Tenerife as “a quality, sustainable and competitive destination.”
He underscored that events like this are “crucial” for promoting the Tenerife brand globally, given that such occasions “boast millionaire audiences and serve as a powerful incentive” to draw them to the island, firmly establishing Tenerife as a “top-tier brand for exposure.”
“These occasions have a considerable influence on the island and stimulate high-end tourism,” he added.
Furthermore, Afonso pointed out the importance of cultural and sports events to “broaden the tourist offering and attract an audience with significant purchasing power,” which helps contribute to the region’s economic growth and the well-being of its residents.
Dimple Melwani, CEO of Tourism of Tenerife, stated that Tenerife’s presence at the Madrid Open serves to bolster “the positioning” of the island within the national market, the second most important for Tenerife, and “currently the primary Canarian destination for tourists from the Peninsula, achieving a 47.6% share in 2024.”
“The gathering of various media, lifestyle influencers, and main operators provides us with a unique opportunity to present the key highlights of the destination, placing particular emphasis on the upcoming summer season and focusing on responsible tourism. This caters to active travellers who select the island for its wide array of complementary activities, ultimately benefiting the local economy,” Melwani remarked.

The Cabildo adds that throughout the event, Tenerife will have a promotional space in the Commercial Village of the Magic Box, designed to grab the attention of visitors while gathering information from those interested in the destination.
Through this initiative, participants, seated in an aircraft seat and connected with head sensors that monitor brain activity, must navigate a plane on a large screen from the point of origin to Tenerife, competing for a prize of a trip to the island for the fastest participant.
The second planned activity occurred on the 30th in the Sky Business area of the sports venue, located above the central court, where a presentation of the destination was delivered to media and influencers, along with a tasting of wines and cheeses from Tenerife.
The Mutua Madrid Open has established itself as a prominent sporting and social event on the calendar of all sports enthusiasts, providing a noteworthy platform for the visibility of commercial brands or destinations, including Tenerife.
From a competitive perspective, the tournament features the top tennis players from the International ATP and WTA rankings.
