The City Council of the capital has strengthened the presence of local police in the neighbourhood of Cruz del Lord Notices diary.
The Security Councillor, Gladis de León, stated that, “additionally, the involvement of Canine Guides is being implemented to address the issues related to drug dealing that have been reported around the Church Square, as per residents’ complaints.”
This central neighbourhood has been facing an “unsustainable” situation for an extended period, resulting from numerous individuals, predominantly impoverished, gathering in the vicinity of the square. Residents report that activities such as drug dealing, uncontrolled drinking, begging, and even a marketplace selling items “rescued from the rubbish” are taking place.
The councillor clarified that “the police have been tackling this unlawful trade in Cruz del Lord since 2022, with numerous ongoing surveillance operations aimed at eradicating the issue. Once the vendors depart, the intensive police monitoring is reduced to a periodic presence, yet recently, the deployment of officers has intensified, leading to multiple citations issued for this infringement.”
