Santa Cruz is celebrating its May festivities this year to mark the 531st anniversary of the city’s establishment. This event would not be the same without García Sanabria Park, which has been filled with colour and joy, playing host to the traditional regional exhibition of flowers, plants, and crafts, now in its 48th year.

The Mayor of the capital, José Manuel Bermúdez, was joined by the Councillor for Fiestas, Javier Caraballero, along with other council members, at the opening of this splendid exhibition yesterday afternoon. It will remain accessible to the public until next Sunday, from 11:00 to 21:00 hours. Before this event, a showcase featuring traditional 20th-century costumes from Tenerife was inaugurated in the García Sanabria exhibition room, which will be available for viewing until 30 May from 11:00 to 21:00.

The mayor stated that “this is one of the pivotal events of the May festivities, attracting thousands each year not only to savour what the fair has to offer, with 74 stalls constituting this year’s event, but also to make García Sanabria Park the epicentre of our foundational celebrations. For this reason, the city is poised to showcase its finest attire, appearing even more splendid if possible.”

Bermúdez added, “In the park, we can find not only flowers, plants, and delectable cuisine but also literature through the Book Fair and, of course, our Gorgoritos, which I refer to as ‘ours’ as they are an integral part of our foundational celebrations and undoubtedly evoke our fondest memories. Therefore, I emphasise that this Santa Cruz is celebrating its 531st anniversary, coinciding with the commencement of three days filled with activities, including the dance performance, Magicians tomorrow, and the Day of the Cross on Saturday.”

Rosa Dávila, the president of the Cabildo, expressed that “the celebration of Santa Cruz’s foundational festivities is complemented by efforts to create a comprehensive programme wherein this park serves as a gathering place for thousands during these days, allowing them to appreciate crafts, flowers, and, of course, gastronomy and good literature. These elements epitomise the essence of this capital, where our culture and values are imbued. We invite the entire island to partake in these festivities.”

The Deputy Minister of the Presidency, Alfonso Cabello, took the opportunity to declare his deep-rooted affection for Santa Cruz, praising the value this capital disseminates across the other islands every May, with its residents being exemplars of tradition for the entire archipelago.

Javier Caraballero, the Fiestas Councillor, emphasised that “Santa Cruz hosts the best Craft Fair in the Canary Islands, which is why we see increasing participation each year.”

Meanwhile, insular councillor Efraín Medina affirmed “the significance of promoting our material and intangible heritage for its preservation, respecting our traditions and encouraging the proper use of traditional attire.”

The exhibition programme features the Book Fair, organised by the Autonomous Agency of Culture, open to the public between Paseo Domingo Pérez Minik and La Rambla, as well as in the Angel Guimerá space, the Glorieta Patricio Estévanez, and the Luis Feria area.
