The tourist municipalities of the Canary Islands have commenced the installation of charging stations for electric vehicles in areas with significant tourist activity. This initiative aims to promote cleaner transportation and facilitate the decarbonisation of tourist locations. Both efforts are components of the Canary Green project, spearheaded by the Association of Tourist Municipalities of the Canary Islands (AMTC), supported by eight million euros from the Next Generation European funds.

The southern municipalities currently equipped with charging points include Adeje (3), Arona (5), Guía de Isora (8), and Santiago del Teide (4), as well as the port of La Cruz (4).

The other municipalities will be included in future project initiatives, which also foresee the installation of smart buoys and lighting, efficient irrigation sensors, capacity monitoring, and parking management through cameras. Furthermore, companies practising sustainability will receive ADS distinctions, along with urban mobility plans, a dedicated app, and a tourist intelligence system.

The AMTC convened its assembly in San Miguel de Abona, where discussions centred on the strategic placement of the chargers, designed to enable tourists to recharge their electric vehicles while enjoying their stay, thereby minimising the impact of charging times and encouraging the use of sustainable transport methods.

The AMTC president and mayor of Adeje, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, emphasised yesterday the necessity for tourist destinations to “align with a more efficient and environmentally respectful model.” He also underscored the significance of smart energy usage and measures like the implementation of low-consumption lighting in crucial areas of the tourist landscape.

Rodríguez Fraga commended the dedication of all mayors within the AMTC to continue advancing measures that “enhance sustainability and the quality of life for both residents and visitors.”

Concept of Tourist Municipality

During the meeting, updates were shared regarding the progress in the Parliament of the Canary Islands on a legislative proposal to clarify the definition of “tourist municipality”, an initiative that AMTC members deem essential for adequately addressing the demands associated with high tourist volumes, particularly in areas such as sanitation and safety.

The AMTC comprises the municipalities of Adeje, Antigua, Arona, Guía de Isora, La Oliva, Mogán, Pájara, Puerto de la Cruz, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Santiago del Teide, San Miguel de Abona, Teguise, Tías, and Yaiza. It was established in 2016 with the aim of advocating for the common interests of these destinations while respecting their unique characteristics.
