The Canary Island Government unveiled the programme on Wednesday to celebrate the Month of the Canary Islands, an initiative under the motto, ‘Pride of who we are’, featuring 75 activities aimed at showcasing the cultural heritage, traditions, and the talent of the men and women of the archipelago across various fields, from art to social and economic sectors.
The celebration of the Month of the Canary Islands, for the second consecutive year, aims to encourage all Canary Islands residents to embrace their unique identity and take pride in being part of this community, through the activities outlined in the programme, as stated by the regional executive in an announcement.
“We are not only discussing our cultural and historical legacy; we also intend to spotlight the potential of the Canary Islands in the global research arena while highlighting the uniqueness of the archipelago as an outermost European territory, and the necessity of safeguarding our jurisdiction,” articulated Alfonso Cabello, spokesperson for the Canarian Executive.
The Minister of Education, Professional Training, and Physical and Sports Activities, Poli Suárez, noted how, “for yet another year,” traditional sports will receive prominent attention and outreach during the commemorative events of the Month of the Canary Islands.
In this regard, among the extensive schedule, Suarez emphasised “the historic milestone of the competition that will be held in Madrid,” at Plaza de Callao on May 17. “This will bring our archipelago closer to the many Canarians residing on the Peninsula, and will showcase the values of our traditional sports to the nation.”
Instead of a single day, the Month of the Canary Islands is established because “it is impossible to encapsulate our cultural, heritage and social diversity in just a few hours,” remarked Alfonso Cabello. “The Month of the Canary Islands is an opportunity for knowledge and appreciation, allowing the rich culture of the islands to reach every corner of the archipelago and even beyond borders,” he added.

The Institutional Act of the Canary Islands will take place at 12:00 hours. This event, hosted at the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, will present the Canary Islands Medals for 2025. It will be co-directed by Julio Tejera and Mario Vera, with ‘Horizon Light’ serving as the title for the event’s overture.
Another innovation is that the institutional fight will now occur at night, scheduled for 9:00 p.m. at the Morro Jable Lucha Terrero in Fuerteventura.
The agenda encompasses events and activities across the eight islands that are designed for all audiences while consistently focusing on highlighting and preserving Canarian traditions and values.
Furthermore, the programme will feature musical activities, craft fairs, workshops, exhibitions, as well as displays of traditional sports and games and scientific events.
Among the new highlights is, for the first time, an official fighting day in central Madrid. Specifically, it will be opposite Saladar de Jandía and Candelaria de Mirca during the 20th round of the DISA Tournament of the Canary Islands for First Male competitors.
Traditional music will resonate in the squares and theatres throughout the archipelago courtesy of the Sabandeños, who will perform in Tenerife, La Palma, Gran Canaria, El Hierro, and Lanzarote, along with a special educational concert for children, among other activities detailed in the programme by the Canary Islands.
