SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE APR. (Press Europa) –
The president of the Canary Islands Government, Fernando Clavijo, expressed this Wednesday his disappointment that “no one” wishes to uphold the rights of unaccompanied migrants residing in the islands, despite the statements made by the constitutional court, the supreme court, and the endorsement of the Derrying Decree-Law.
“No one is keen to protect childhood and no one is interested in delivering justice for the Canary Islands,” he declared during the Plenary control session of the Parliament, responding to a query from the popular group. He noted that it is “hardly believable” that the State lacks the capacity within its reception network to accommodate the minor asylum seekers, whose claims reflect a rate exceeding 96%.
He highlighted that the Supreme Court has acknowledged the “overcrowding” of minors and the violation of their rights, a situation of “extreme gravity,” given that these refugees possess documentation and work permits. Upon reaching 18, “they find themselves on the streets with no chance of rebuilding their lives.”
The spokesperson for the Popular Group, Luz Reverón, remarked that the central government “has taken no action” since the Supreme Court issued a ten-day ultimatum to host the minor asylum seekers, deeming it a “historical slight” to the archipelago.
“The only response has been silence; it is an affront and a sign of disrespect,” she stated, questioning whether “anyone genuinely believes” that the State cannot accommodate them, particularly when the Canary Islands have seen over 5,500 arrivals in the past year and a half “on their own.” “We have been waiting for nearly 30 days, and Pedro Sánchez has yet to provide any response,” she commented.
